Chester E. Grosch
Professor of Oceanography; Professor of Computer Science
Ph.D., M.E., M.S., Stevens Institute of Technology (1967, 1959, 1956)
Physical Oceanography
Fluid dynamics, boundary layers, stability, computational fluid dynamics
Dr. Grosch came to Old Dominion University in 1973 as a Samuel L. and Fay M. Slover Chair of Oceanography. Since his graduate work at Stevens Institute of Technology, he has held research and teaching positions at various institutions including Stevens Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Pratt Institute, and the University of Reading, U.K. While at Pratt Institute, he was chair of the Department of Computer Science and director of the Computer Center. In 1989, he was a Royal Society Guest Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, U.K. Dr. Grosch has done extensive professional consulting and currently serves as consultant for the Institute for Computer Applications in Science Engineering (ICASE).
Research Interests
Current research is focused on: (a) basic turbulence dynamics; (b) climate change
in the North-East Pacific; (c) Langmuir circulation and turbulence on continental
shelfs; and (d) the impact of correlated recruitment on fish populations in
Chesapeake Bay. I collaborate with oceanographers (all flavors), aerospace
scientists and engineers, physicists, fisheries scientists and bird ecologists.
