Abstract
Large Eddy Simulations of Langmuir circulation in wind-driven currents in
shallow water will be described. This talk will focus, after a short description
of the numerical method, on the dynamics as the parameters of the flow are varied.
In particular, the major differences in the flow dynamics between wind shear-driven
Couette flow and the same flow with Langmuir circulation will be emphasized.
The diagnostics will include the mean profiles, the invariants of Reynolds-stress
anisotropy tensor and the balances of the kinetic energy and dissipation rate
equations. A visualization of the flow will also be shown. The talk will end
with a brief summary of our current understanding of this flow.
Biography
C.E. Grosch has been at Old Dominion University since 1973 when he was appointed
a Samuel L. & Fay M. Slover Professor of Oceanography. Since 1982, he has also
had a joint appointment as Professor of Computer Science. Since graduate study
(M.S. - Applied Mathematics and Ph.D. - Physics) at Stevens Institute of Technology,
he has held research and teaching positions at Stevens Institute of Technology,
Columbia University, Pratt Institute, and the University of Reading, U.K. and was a
Royal Society Guest Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, U.K. His research
has centered on theoretical and computational (and occasionally experimental) fluid
dynamics. This has ranged from the dynamics of bubbles thru surface and internal
waves, boundary layers, flow stability, the interaction of combustion and flow
dynamics, subsonic and supersonic flow, hyper-velocity impact, and DNS and LES
calculations of turbulent flows. His interest in Computer Science arose out of
computational fluid dynamics and is centered on architectures and algorithms for
high performance computation.
