Status Report – 21 April 2002 (LMG02-03)

From LMG Chief Scientist, Jose Torres to NBP Chief Scientist, Peter Wiebe

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the Palmer news.  Glad to hear that the fire did no telling damage.  We have just dropped off Jenn and her seal team at Rothera and are now in the midst of an ADCP survey across the breadth of Laubeuf Fjord to look at the influence of the tidal cycle on current flow through Laubeuf.  It thus far has been every bit as rich as last year, with some surprises on the fish front.  We have captured literally hundreds of small Pleuragramma in the 70 mm or age class 2 size range at depths of 200-300 m.  Lots of ctenos as well and beaucoups krill in the upper 100 m. Did a dive today, but our divers didn't see any furcilia under the ice.  Have you been getting any in your nets in the offshore stations??

We'll be doing a vertical migration study starting tomorrow, over about a 48 hour period.  We could certainly rendezvous with you on the 22nd when you  are scheduled to be at stations 28-32.  I guess Alice and Steve will work out the details.  Hope things continue to chug along well.  I'll be in touch tomorrow.

My best, Jose
