They're making big advances in small technologies on USF's Saint Petersburg Campus. For the past five years, the Center for Ocean Technology at the College of Marine Science has been working with thumbnail or smaller-sized components called "Microelectromechanical Systems" or "MEMs." Kurt Petersen, the President and C-E-O of California hi-tech business "Cepheid," is recognized as the father of MEMs, and recently spoke at the annual Business Technology Conference held at USF. Doctor Paula Bickford, a career scientist at the V.A. Medical Center, says as people age, oxidative stress and the buildup of "free radicals" cause damage to the brain, leading to age-related mental deterioration, and quite possibly, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
