Picture of the Day for 16 August 2002

Today everyone was quite busy, the sea ice team completed ice optics measurements and the ice microbial team took ice cores, while the krill biology group continued to try and find the elusive juvenile krill.  The predator group finished one phase of their research.  The seal biologists, with the assistance of the penguin team, captured 2 crabeater seals and put their 11th and final satellite tracking transmitter on one of them.  It has been amazing that the primary focus of the seal work has been completed within the first 2 weeks of the cruise!  This photo shows the male crabeater seal sleeping with his new satellite tracking device attached.  Photo by Dan Costa.
