Picture of the Day for 20 August 2002

We continued to convoy with the R/V N.B Palmer throughout yesterday looking for a safe place to set up for our next process station.  We had very cold weather and temperatures dropped to -55ºC with wind chill.  This morning we finally found a suitable site that was away from icebergs that provided good access to a stable ice floe.  While we were setting up the station, a Minke whale surfaced immediately behind the ship.  Many of us ran down and saw it surface at least 3 times before it left.  Given our good fortune we named our new home for the next 7-9 days “Ice Station Minke”.  Photo by Dan Costa.
