Picture of the Day for 26 August 2002

The weather was mild by Antarctic standards today, varying between -5-9ºC.  The dive team continued to collect samples overnight using nets deployed from ice holes.  This picture shows Marine Tech Jenny White checking the nets in the ship’s light.  The triangular ice sculptures are where the dive holes are and provided the name of our ice station from the sculpture “Rodin”.  The day was rather exciting as we were visited by an elephant seal that hauled out on the ice and by a leopard seal who also visited the dive holes.  Needless to say, the divers left the water.  Photo by Dan Costa.
