Modems & Dialing In

Using CCPO's Terminal Server

CCPO now supports two dial-in lines. The numbers are 683-5552, 683-5553 and 683-4743. They support up to 19200 bps. After connecting to either number, the terminal server automatically connects you to the machine oyashio.

Using the Computer Center's Terminal server

The Computer Center provides dial-up access to ODU's network via the number 683-4040.

CCPO does not support the Computer Center's modems and any problems with them should be addressed to the Computer Services help desk (683-3192, M-F, 8am-5pm)

Steps for logging into a Sun Workstation over a dialup line via the Computer Center:

  1. Set your speed to to 300, 1200, 2400 or 9600 bps.
  2. Call 683-4040.
  3. Press . The ``enter class'' menu will appear.
  4. Enter telnet.ccpo.odu.edu then press <RETURN> The message ``connected'' will appear. If you enter a valid host address, you can now login normally.

Logout using the exit command. The line will automatically hang up.

Suggestions and Help

When dialing into a Sun, it is suggested that you set your terminal type to the type of terminal or terminal software you are using. Some programs, such as talk, emacs, and vi need this information to function correctly. This can be done easily with the commands:
setenv TERM xxxx
Where "xxxx" is the name of your terminal type. Common types are "vt100", "vt52", "vt102", and "ansi".

If you don't know the name of your terminal type, contact the system administrator by sending mail to ``root''. Once you know your terminal type, you can have the Suns automatically set that type when you login on a dialup with these commands, which should be placed in the file ``.login'' in your home directory:

setenv TERM xxxx
