Valle-Levinson and Atkinson met with Paul Filmer and others at NSF in early April. Interesting facts where that 1) they don't know what the budget for science will be so there is no idea of the range of budgets we might request, 2) further information on the Phase two startup will be forthcoming.
Atkinson will be going to Santiago and Puerto Montt on May 6 to meet with Chilean PI's and with U. Chile administrators.
Gunnar Knapp (University of Alaska) will be giving an invited talk at the Chilean Trout and Salmon Farmers meeting in Late May.
On May 13 Atkinson and Valle-Levinson particpated in a teleconference with Filmer, other IAI officals and about five other IAI PI's. The information that conference was not too subtantial. An official announcement for the Phase II proposals will come out in September or so. That is what we will respond to with our proposal. The Phase II proposal to form a research center will be due late May or early June 1997. Funding would be most likely in the FY1998 budget year.

ACCIS News:
Carole Seyfrit will be working as an IPA in the NSF Polar Programs office for the coming year. She is permitted to participate in ACCIS in a limited way during that time.
Meanwhile Larry Hamilton will provide leadership in the socio/economic/health areas.
Although we have heard that our project was recommended for funding and have also heard that grants and contracts contacted our Research Foundation still no word on the grant itself.
We are still homing in on a date in March/April 1997.
Unlike some other IAI projects we will not advertise the meeting as it will be closed to non-invitees from countries other than Chile. We see this as a meeting to share information and ideas and get a proposal written.
