Wind data

In the Virginia Coastal areas are installed several meteorological stations where winds are regularly measured (NDBC web page). We selected the stations that are collecting information on the ocean and close to the study area (Fig. 1):

  • Station CHLV2 - Chesapeake Light Tower
  • Station CBBV2 - Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
  • Buoy 44014  - buoy located at 64 nm off Virginia Beach
  • station DUCN7 - Duck Pier, North Carolina

These stations reported data hourly, these data is averaged over an eight-minute period for buoys and a two-minute period for land stations. See Wind Averaging Methods.

Data are available since 1990 except the CBBV2 where the record starts in 1992.

Wind data can be obtained from the National Data Buoy Center.
On the bottom of this page you can see plots for the last five days of wind speed for the mentioned stations
