Julie R. Morgan
Program Specialist
B.A., Old Dominion University (1992)
Julie R. Morgan started working at the Center for Coastal Physical
Oceanography (CCPO) in 1991 as an undergraduate technical research
associate. In 1992, she received a B.A. in English from Old Dominion
University. Upon graduation, she left CCPO for seven months and went to the
Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), now known as the
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). She returned to CCPO in 1993
to work with Dr. Eileen Hofmann as a technical writer. In this capacity, she
served as the technical editor for Foundations for Ecological Research West
of the Antarctic Peninsula, as part of the American Geophysical Union's
Antarctic Research Series. She coordinates logistics and compiles and edits
reports for national and international meetings. Julie also manages several
research grants and coordinates proposals. She has served as both the editor
and technical editor for CCPO Circulation, the Center's informational
newsletter. Julie was the coordinator and Web
site manager for the Southern Ocean
GLOBEC Planning Office, which was directed by
Dr. Hofmann and housed at CCPO from 2005-2010. She served as the technical editor for
Integrated Ecosystem Studies of Western Antarctic Peninsula Continental
Shelf Waters and Related Southern Ocean Regions (Deep-Sea Research II, Vol. 51,
Nos. 17-19, 2004); Dynamics of Plankton, Krill, and Predators in
Relation to Environmental Features of the Western Antarctic Peninsula and
Related Areas: SO GLOBEC Part II (Deep-Sea Research II,
Vol. 55, Nos. 3-4, 2008); and Understanding the Linkages between
Antarctic Food Webs and the Environment: A Synthesis of Southern Ocean
GLOBEC Studies (Deep-Sea Research II, Vol. 58, Issues 13-16,
Pages 1505-1740, July-August 2011). She is the editorial assistant for
special volumes of Progress in Oceanography and Current Opinion in
Environmental Sustainability. Julie also coordinates various
educational outreach opportunities, such as
a Boy
Scouts of America Oceanography Merit Badge program. Outside
of CCPO, Julie is an active volunteer with her Bernese Mountain Dog (Santera
Winter Storm Ranger CGC TDIA THD). Julie and Ranger, a certified therapy dog,
participate in local library and school reading programs, in addition to
other opportunities. On September 11, 2008, The Literacy Partnership
recognized Julie and Ranger for their work with the 2008 RADM Ben Hacker
Leadership in Literacy Award (individual category).
