On September 8, 2007, Dr. Hofmann gave an overview presentation to a conference room full of Scouts and Scout leaders at the NOAA Marine Operations Center Atlantic. The Scouts were completing the requirements necessary to obtain an Oceanography Merit Badge. For the second half of the program, the group was split into two, with the first half going out on the R/V Fay Slover, Old Dominion University's research vessel and the #1 Coast Guard-inspected vessel in Norfolk, to conduct sampling. The second half of the group participated in dockside activities, to include using a secchi disk and refractometer. Then the two groups switched to allow all Scouts to participate in both activities. This was the eighth such program held since its inception in 2004. Future programs are already scheduled through 2009, with a waiting list beyond 2010.
